Global Asymptotic Behavior of the Chemostat: General Response Functions and Different Removal Rates
In this paper, we consider a competition model between n species in a chemostat that incorporates both monotone and nonmonotone general response functions and distinct removal rates. We show that only the species with the lowest break-even concentration survives, provided that the variation of distinct removal rates relative to the flow rate of the chemostat can be controlled by either the diff...
متن کاملSimple Food Chain in a Chemostat with Distinct Removal Rates
In this paper, we consider a model describing predator]prey interactions in a chemostat that incorporates both general response functions and distinct removal rates. In this case, the conservation law fails. To overcome this difficulty, we make use of a novel way of constructing a Lyapunov function in the study of the global stability of a predator-free steady state. Local and global stability ...
متن کاملBiological control of the chemostat with nonmonotonic response and different removal rates.
We show the global stabilization of the chemostat with nonmonotonic growth, adding a new species as a "biological" control, in presence of different removal rates for each species. This result is obtained by an extension of the Competitive Exclusion Principle in the chemostat, for the case of two species with different removal rates and at least one nonmonotonic response.
متن کاملCompetition between Plasmid-bearing and Plasmid-free Microorganisms in a Chemostat with Distinct Removal Rates
In this paper we consider a competition model between plasmid-bearing and plasmid-free organisms in a chemostat that incorporates both general response functions and distinct removal rates. The model with identical removal rates was proposed in a paper of Stephanopoulis and Lapidus, and the analysis there was local. The complete global analysis of the model in the case of identical removal rate...
متن کاملThe Buffered Chemostat with Non-Monotonic Response Functions
We show how a particular spatial structure with a buffer globally stabilizes the chemostat dynamics with non-monotonic response function, while this is not possible with single, serial or parallel chemostats of the same total volume and input flow. We give a characterization of the set of such configurations that satisfy this property, as well as the configuration that ensures the best nutrient...
